Russell manages to surprise at Mercedes: 'I didn't think that'

Last season's Formula 1 grid once again featured several talented drivers. Jolyon Palmer enjoyed the likes of George Russell and Lando Norris, he told Formula1.com. Although both men did not compete for the world title, they showed what they are capable of.
Russell made the switch from Williams to Mercedes early this year and then barely had time to get used to it. He proved he did not need it either, as the Briton adapted with lightning speed and managed to finish above teammate Lewis Hamilton in the world championship.
"Russell has long been touted as a star of the future and made my list last year for his sensational qualifying lap in the Williams at Spa," the former Formula One driver stated. "We knew what he could do. But I didn’t think he’d be able to outscore Hamilton in his first season in the Mercedes team."
Hopes for first win for McLaren
Alongside Russell, Norris also showed a positive side. The McLaren driver experienced a difficult season start at his team and managed to fight his way back during the race year. It earned him seventh place in the world championship, making him the first driver after Mercedes, Red Bull Racing and Ferrari.
Palmer expects the driver to be able to take his first victory in Formula 1 in 2023. "He’ll be hoping for a leap in performance from his team next season. If that comes, I expect Norris to be knocking on the door of that maiden race win once again."
