Former Formula One driver Jacky Ickx has expressed his admiration for Lewis Hamilton. The Ferrari legend believes the Brit may have a greater impact on the sport with his activism than with his achievements in F1.

Hamilton is one of the most successful drivers in Formula 1, but the seven-time world champion is not only concerned with racing. Hamilton also uses his million-dollar platform to discuss various issues in society. As the only black driver in F1, it is important for the Brit to fight for more diversity and inclusion in motorsport. He himself set up the 'Hamilton Commission' to achieve that goal.

Eight-time Grand Prix winner Ickx praised the Mercedes driver's efforts. He calls Hamilton an "extraordinary" champion, but the Belgian especially praises the driver's activism. "Lewis is special in two aspects. He is special as the driver he wanted to be all his life, training for it and the successful man having all the possible records. But also he’s the first person to involve himself in such a level of interest to defend Black Lives Matter, for example. He’s unique on that aspect and I don’t know which one is the most fantastic in a way," he told a Twitch stream From Peter Windsor.

Activism versus F1 performance

Ickx has never had the chance to meet Hamilton, but the former driver would love to have a conversation with the Briton. "If I had to put [his achievements] in order, is [activism] number one or number two? I am tempted to say number one. I wish, one day, I have the chance to meet him because I love the idea to tell him what I feel about it." the Belgian said.
