Hamilton disregards 'gentleman’s agreement' and overtakes Verstappen
There is a so-called 'gentleman's agreement' in Formula 1, which means that drivers do not overtake each other in order to skip the line in qualifying. However, Lewis Hamilton did not feel like waiting in Abu Dhabi and decided to pass Max Verstappen in the last corner.
Hamilton skips line in qualifying
Towards the end of Q1 in qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the track was quite crowded. This resulted in slow-moving cars as drivers wanted to leave a gap to the one in front of them. Both Verstappen and Hamilton made comments about the traffic on the track as they prepared for their flying lap.
However, where Verstappen kept to the symbolic agreement, he was overtaken by several other drivers. As he brakes for the final corner to leave a gap to the driver in front, he has Hamilton behind him, but the Mercedes driver is not as patient.
Hamilton steps on the gas and overtakes Verstappen at the last moment, to start his flying lap a little earlier. It remains conspicuously quiet in the Dutchman's cockpit as his engineer urges him to stay calm. "Let him go, let him play," it sounds from the pit wall.
