Max Verstappen returns this weekend to the ground where he won his first world title just last calendar year. The Limburger reminisces in conversation with father Jos Verstappen, while also looking back on the Brazilian Grand Prix.

The former Formula 1 driver says he has not had a pleasant week. Indeed, a lot of commotion ensued in Brazil when the Red Bull Racing driver decided not to let Sergio Perez past, thus ignoring a team order.

"Max was portrayed as the bogeyman, while that was unjustified," his father states. "Then when my wife says something to me, I don't hear it. That's how busy I am with it. It will always be that way. I doubted whether I would come to this race, but got on the plane anyway."

Verstappen thinks back to 2021 denouement

Rather, Verstappen is focusing on the final race of this season. Although his son no longer needs the points, he hopes for a strong end to the season. In doing so, he often thinks back to last race year when the decision for the world title fell in Abu Dhabi.

"All flashbacks, for sure. Unbelievable what all happened then. The run-up. First that race in Jeddah. But especially that I was sitting up here in the little office during the race and completely lost it. And then that discharge. I still remember every detail. I know it still hurts for some; that they can't stomach it. But be honest: Max deserved that championship after all."
