Audi see Formula 1 as a "highly challenging development laboratory"

Audi will be joining Formula 1 as an engine supplier from the 2026 season onwards. Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG Markus Duesmann took part in the press conference following the announcement. Duesmann highlighted how attractive Formula 1 is for a brand like Audi. 

Integral part 

Audi is a big name in the world of motorsport, but Formula 1 has escaped them for a long time. That will all change in a few years when the new Formula 1 engines arrive in the sport. Duesmann explained how attractive Formula 1 seems from the outside. 

“Motorsport is an integral part of Audi’s DNA. Formula 1 is both a global stage for our brand and a highly challenging development laboratory. The combination of high performance and competition is always a driver of innovation and technology transfer in our industry. With the new rules, now is the right time for us to get involved. After all, Formula 1 and Audi both pursue clear sustainability goals," Duesmann said. 

During the press conference, the Audi representatives explained that they do not have a team yet and will decide on that in the future though rumours suggest it will be Sauber. They also explained how Formula 1's plan to go carbon neutral by 2030 and the push on E-fuels made the deal even more attractive. 

Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development Oliver Hoffmann alluded to this. "In view of the major technological leaps that the series is making towards sustainability in 2026, we can speak of a new Formula 1. Formula 1 is transforming, and Audi wants to actively support this journey. A close link between our Formula 1 project and AUDI AG’s Technical Development department will enable synergies," he said.
