Fernando Alonso is confident about the season so far and says he is back to his best at Alpine. This is mainly due to some 'unexpected performances', something the Spaniard says has always been a strength.

The Spaniard has had some great moments this season. He had some strong qualifying performances and was able to start from second place at the Canadian Grand Prix. The two-time world champion seems to be troubled mainly by technical problems and annoying events that get in the way of good performances.

Better version

“I miss winning, and I miss the feeling of fighting for podiums and bigger things, yes", said Alonso. Yet the Spaniard says he also enjoys the fact that he is trying to become a better version of himself compared to 2019.

For the Alpine driver, it feels like he can perform at 100 per cent again and show unexpected things. "That kind of thing has been always my strength all over my career. I feel that I'm back to that level, so that probably makes me very proud of this comeback.

Talks about future in summer break

Whether the Spaniard stays with the French team will be discussed this summer. He is expected to re-sign, but Alpine also has reserve driver Oscar Piastri on the sidelines who has great potential to perform well in the premier class. "It's never a guarantee that you will stay”, said Alonso. “We have to agree on something I think over the break."
