Alpine has announced an increase in staff to match the size of the top teams. The Renault-powered team wants to be able to compete with Red Bull Racing, Ferrari and Mercedes.

Renault's factory car has been back on the grid since 2016, but the engine supplier has had to invest heavily in that time. In 2019, the team's factory received a two-storey extension. Now another expansion is coming, as Alpine is looking for new staff, including in the field of aerodynamics. Team boss Otmar Szafnauer says the following to The Race:

"We’re looking at hiring another 75 people, there’s about 850 of us here. We’ve got to be at the size of the big teams if we want to fight with the big teams. There are some areas that I’ve been used to at other teams be a little bit stronger and have some more knowledge. And in those areas, we just have to add people with that type of knowledge."

Alpine wants to win races by 2023

Alpine is currently fifth in the constructors' championship with 81 points, the same number as rival McLaren. The team wants to develop a better car in 2023. According to Fernando Alonso, the goal is to win races then.
