Only losers' after Perez's punishment: "It's complete nonsense".

Renger van der Zande has no good word to say about the stewards' decision to take away Sergio Perez's time in Q2, which automatically invalidated all his times from Q3. According to the two-time winner of the Daytona 24 Hours, Sergio Perez is unfairly penalised by the FIA's incompetence.

"So they had someone from Q2 start in Q3 and ended up taking someone [Perez] out of Q3 again. I think it's complete nonsense," Van der Zande is clear in the Race Cafe on Ziggo Sport. He then cites an A4 sheet that was brought out by FIA to explain why Perez was eventually put back. "This says it all. It's a whole piece of text to explain why they made a mistake. It's plain nonsense, there are only losers."

According to the 36-year-old Dutchman, this decision by the stewards benefits no one. "The fans don't understand it anymore, we at the table don't understand it anymore, the teams are not happy and neither is Gasly. Otherwise he would have made it to Q3. He's also like, 'What's in this for me'." If Gasly had been allowed to go through to Q3, he might also have been in front of the crashing Lewis Hamilton.

The stewards were focused on the last two corners and not where Perez went off track with four wheels. That is why they only found out later. "If they put a sensor down at the kerbs to assess those track limits, put it down everywhere. That's where they go wrong," Doornbos is stern.
