Carlos Sainz indicated after the Canadian Grand Prix that he had a faster pace than Max Verstappen, but Jan Lammers disagrees. According to the former driver, the Dutchman showed that he was the fastest man on the track.

Verstappen's dominant victory nevertheless raises questions for some people. Due to Leclerc's grid penalty, the Monegasque had to start at the back and never got close to the cars in front. Still, the question is whether Leclerc could have overtaken his rival for the win, especially since he has been outperforming Sainz all season.

"The vision of Red Bull is much more with self-reflection. They won, but they assume that they still have to work hard because Carlos was so fast. There is of course a bit of an idea, which is not quite expressed by everybody, that they thought: Carlos couldn't overtake Max, but maybe Leclerc could have," Lammers told the Formula 1 podcast of the NOS.

'Verstappen absolutely the fastest on track'

After the race Sainz let it be known that he was the fastest man on the track, but Lammers disagrees. Indeed, Verstappen was a lot faster in the first sector, while the Spaniard had to take advantage mainly of the third sector with the DRS.

"What I found curious is the comment of Carlos Sainz who was of the opinion that he was the fastest car on the track. He gave all the other factors as to why he didn't win, but where do you draw that from? He could only drive so fast because of that DRS. I think Max was absolutely the fastest on the track," Lammers said.
