Toto Wolff has accused Fernando Alonso of a 'Formula 2' driving style during the Monaco Grand Prix. According to the Mercedes team boss, holding up everyone on the track should not be allowed.

Lewis Hamilton had a frustrating race on the Monaco street circuit. The Briton started from P8, a position that is not ideal anyway on a circuit where overtaking is difficult. At the start of the race, Hamilton came into contact with Esteban Ocon. The Alpine driver received a five-second time penalty for the incident, which ultimately prevented him from taking home any points.

Ocon was not the only Alpine that Hamilton was bothered by. After the restart, the seven-time world champion found himself stuck behind Alonso. Indeed, the Spaniard was more than four seconds per lap slower than the cars in front of him, but Hamilton failed to overtake him on the narrow street circuit. This created a long train behind Alonso.

Wolff not happy with Alonso's driving style

In a press release from Mercedes, Wolff already let it be known that the layout of the circuit needs to be looked at so that there are no long trains on the track. "You can see there is another lesson that track position is everything in Monaco, I mean five seconds is like a Formula 2 car. If a car [Alonso] can slow down by almost five seconds and hold everybody up it is just a shame for the racing here," the team boss tells Sky Sports.

Alonso, meanwhile, enjoyed his race. In an interview, the Spaniard indicated that he likes to keep drivers behind him in Monaco.
