Defending champion team Mercedes unveiled the Mercedes W13 with which they are going for their ninth consecutive world title. Lewis Hamilton will be looking for the world record of eight personal titles with the W13. With the front wing, Mercedes seems to have taken a good step immediately.

Mercedes W13 has aggressive front wing

GPBlog already analysed the W13 in detail. In this analysis especially the floor, the length of the W13 and the so-called `bottleneck´ were pointed out as remarkable points. Another peculiar point of the W13 is the front wing with the somewhat convex shape. Motorsport.com Calls the wing of Mercedes the most aggressive to date. The long narrow nose of the car reaches the two panels at the front of the wing with a small arc. According to the medium, Mercedes deliberately chose this convex shape so that there is enough room for the air around the front wing and under the nose.

Like the other teams, Mercedes has chosen to use the maximum allowed four flaps on the front wing. In previous years, teams drove there with five. The design of these elements of the front wing at the W13 are the most aggressive of what we have seen so far. The three upper elements run off the lower plate in an arc and meet again at the endplate of the wing with a steep drop; this is done to maximize the direction of airflow.

Finally, the endplates of the front wings are triangles that allow for a steeper downward orientation of the three upper elements, and therefore may also be able to be placed higher. Since this year one less element has to be driven, the upper part of the wing ends up lower than before. Only making the elements present steeper can make it possible to make the front wing slightly higher and help to increase the downforce at the front wing.
