New regulations

For years it was not an option for the company to get into Formula 1. Since unlimited amounts could be spent on motorcycles, it simply cost more to fund a team annually than it returned. However, that picture changed due to new regulations within the FIA. From 2026, there will be a budget cap, which means that the engine suppliers have an amount to adhere to.

It was time for the Volkswagen Group to make the decision to enter the motorsport class in the future. After a long meeting, the Volkswagen Group, therefore, decided that it wants to do everything possible to achieve success in Formula 1. Audi and Porsche, among others, immediately made grateful use of this by talking to various teams. However, with a few years to go, the car brands still have time to prepare for the new rules that will apply from 2026.
