Valtteri Bottas has been in the spotlight for the chaos he caused at the start of the Hungarian Grand Prix. The crash took place just before the summer break, the period in which Mercedes could be looking to decide on their second driver for 2022.

Bottas has been given a one-year contract extension each time at Mercedes in recent years, so he says he is used to the uncertainty. Many think that his crash in Hungary did him good business with the team, but is that indeed the case? And if not, what options are left?

Options for Bottas inside and outside Formula 1

Lawrence Barretto writes on behalf Formula1.com that the Finn's results and reliability may not outweigh the young talent of George Russell, who is eager to get into the Mercedes. "And he knows that his departure will mean the end of his hopes of ever winning the world title," Barretto wrote.

Another option, should Mercedes go for Russell, is a possible return to Williams. Bottas made his Formula One debut there, and would probably welcome the experienced driver back with open arms. Alfa Romeo is also a possibility, should Kimi Raikkonen hang up his helmet. Another alternative is rallying, something he has previously expressed a positive attitude towards.
