McLaren technical director delighted with 2022 rules: "Better racing"

Just after Formula 1 showed its concept car for 2022, there were already several reactions from teams, claiming that the concept of the 2022 car would look completely different from what was presented. The question arises: will the new rules have any effect now that all the teams are once again frantically trying to build a car that will find the loopholes in the new rules?

Easier tracking

James Key, McLaren's technical director, thinks it will be fine. Speaking to Motorsport-total.com he says: "It's still early days because there's still a lot of research to be done for the 2022 cars, but a lot of energy has been put into the rules. If there were loopholes, they were discussed and closed or otherwise changed."

The new rules make their appearance to make it easier to follow cars around the track and make overtaking easier, something that makes racing less spectacular at the moment. "If the cars were unveiled now, you would get something pretty close to the proposed ideal. Early next year there will probably be variations, but the cars should still be easier to follow than before."

Better racing

"I think Pat Symonds [Formula One technical director], Ross Brawn and the guys have put together a good project," Key said. "It's absolutely the right way to develop new rules by getting to the heart of the matter - especially with these aerodynamic-oriented rules, which are the most important ones. Obviously, we have tyres and other things as well, but the main thing is to get the aerodynamics right so we can race better."
