On Charles Leclerc's route to the pole position grid box, the Ferrari car had an issue. It seemed likely to be a gearbox issue following Leclerc's crash in qualifying on Saturday. However, team boss Matia Binotto says the cause for the DNS could be unrelated to the crash.

Binotto reacts

"We need to fully understand what happened. The issue is on the driveshaft on the left-hand side, it is not a gearbox issue. The gearbox was okay for the race. What happened is on the other side to the accident, it may be unrelated to the accident," Binotto told Sky Sports.

"Let's wait and see. We have to analyse the pieces and the data to get an explanation. There was no gamble on the gearbox, we're fully confident this was okay for the race. We need to carefully analyse. This was an area that was not checked because it was not damaged."

Mixed feelings

Whilst Leclerc couldn't race in Monaco, Carlos Sainz picked up the pieces and finished the race in second place. Sainz equalled his best result and finished on the podium for the first time in Monte Carlo. As a result, Binotto sees "a lot of positives from the weekend."
