Mercedes snipes at Marko: "He's the grumbler here, you can't be that wry"

Toto Wolff and Helmut Marko may be compatriots, but they're not friends at the moment. The two seem to be at odds after the Red Bull Racing advisor's statements earlier this weekend. After qualifying, Marko accused the Mercedes team of unsporting play. Wolff is not amused by this.

During qualifying Max Verstappen was on a fast lap. A bit ahead of him on the tarmac was Lando Norris who was told by his engineer not to give the Dutchman any advantage. According to Marko, this was whispered to the McLaren team by McLaren's engine supplier in the hope that Verstappen wouldn't be able to take pole position.

Wolff not happy with Red Bull

Andreas Seidl said that this was sheer nonsense and Wolff joins him in that statement. The Austrian team boss is quoted by German MOPO as saying, "He's not the doctor after all, he's the grumbler here! You can't be so wry. One time it's against you and the next time it's on your side. Seeing the world conspire like that doesn't make your life any happier."

In any case, Wolff is satisfied with how Sunday went. Lewis Hamilton took his second win of the season and saw the gap to Verstappen in the world championship increase by seven points. In total the lead is now eight points. "At least we annoyed the doctor," Wolff laughed at Motorsport-Total.com.
