Many people were looking forward to the return of Fernando Alonso in Formula 1. One of the best drivers of the 21st century who will try one more time with the team he won the world championship with. That success will have to be achieved in 2022.

For now, Alpine, and with it Alonso, might be the least flashy team on the grid in 2021. They'll be dangling at the bottom of the midfield, happy to score a point or two. Alonso knows the challenge that awaits him.

Alonso disappointed with his performance

At the press conference prior to the Portuguese Grand Prix he tells Motorsport-Total.com Amongst others that he doesn't expect anything will change in the position of Alpine before the end of the season. He will have to fight with x number of teams for positions eight to fifteen.

The only hope for improvement at the moment lies with himself. "The feelings after Imola were quite negative," he says of his own performance two weeks ago. He says he has no doubt he will perform at 100 per cent of his potential again, but "that's going to take time", the Spaniard admits.
