Valtteri Bottas' impact in the Grand Prix at the circuit of Imola is one with many consequences. According to the usually well informed Motorsport.com Bottas' W12 will cost around US$1.39 million to repair.

In previous seasons, this was never a big issue, but it just so happens that Formula 1 has a $145 million budget cap since this season. Just under one per cent of the total 2021 budget will therefore go towards repairing Bottas' car. Luckily, it seems that the power unit is virtually undamaged.

Mercedes in trouble already?

Mercedes, like every other team in the premier class of motor racing, makes a budget before the season starts, but Bottas' crash has become a very big expense, especially this early in the season. The Emilia Romagna GP was only the second weekend of the year. There are 21 more Grands Prix in 2021.

It will be important for Lewis Hamilton and his Finnish teammate not to suffer too much damage. Mercedes is already struggling to stay under the budget cap and the German team certainly doesn't need this kind of trouble. Toto Wolff also said that there is less money to invest in the development of the W12 now that more than a million euros has to be spent to get Bottas' car to the start line again in Portugal.
