The rules will remain the same for 2021 and a large part of the car will not be allowed to be developed, yet Pat Fry believes that a lot can change in 2021. The changes that could take place are greater than expected.

Due to the coronavirus and the troubles that have followed, Formula 1 decided to postpone the changes to the regulations from 2021 to 2022 and to freeze the development of cars. This way, the teams would incur less costs, but is this really the case? Because Pirelli expects to run into problems, some changes had to be made.

Renault has to change a lot

The changes to the floor, which will have to be much simpler in 2021 to relieve Pirelli, has more influence than expected. ''Although various parts of the car have been homologated so that you can't change them, there are still quite a few parts that can be modified. You can't make a completely new car, but you can make one that's half new," Fry said to Motorsport.com.

''The change to the floor looks like a small, unimportant change, but it changes the aerodynamics at the rear of the car quite drastically. It's all about who's best to deal with it before we can say how the pecking order is changing. I'm guessing that McLaren can change a little more by changing their engine, which will allow them to change many other parts of the car in addition to the homologation issues,'' the technical director is already alert to the competition.
