The year of the battle in midfield; this is how we can look at the 2020 F1 season. McLaren driver Lando Norris is in the middle of that battle, and in an interview with Auto, Motor und Sport he gives his view on what this means for the sport.

The excitement during a GP weekend this year is found in the battle between four teams in midfield who are fighting for third place in the constructors' championship. Norris: “We have a lot of good races in midfield. Between Renault, Racing Point, Alpha Tauri and us, the races are great every weekend.”

So how do we make the battle for the championship more exciting? It's easy, according to Norris. Move the midfield battle to the front. “Imagine if it were not about places in midfield, but about the lead. Then a lot more people would watch the races."

Mercedes success earnt, but boring

Norris recognises that Mercedes' success is not undeserved, but it doesn't make for a more enjoyable viewing experience: "One team has been doing a much better job than everyone else for years. That's why it deserves the success. On the other hand, Formula 1 makes it boring. The show is suffering. If we want to improve something, we need the battles between four or five cars in midfield at the top.”
