The FIA plans to make new changes to the rules for aerodynamics for 2021. All this in order to reduce the downforce of the cars and thus reduce the pressure on the Pirelli tyres. This should improve the safety of the drivers. Ferrari is now going along with this and the team boss denies that they have complained about this

Team boss Mattia Binotto says to Autosport: "Firstly, we just have to remember that for 2021 the set of aero regulations have already been changed under the World Council for a reduction in aero performance because of the care for the tyres", indicating that Ferrari were already working to reduce the downforce in the future.

Binotto then goes back to the rules postponed by corona for a year "Initially we should have new 18-inch tires in 2021, which are now postponed to 2022, so the tires that we have had in the past are identical for 2021. There is no doubt that by increasing the aero performance, the degradation of the tyres will be greater. I think Silverstone has been a good example in that respect. I think that there is nothing wrong with what has happened with the tires themselves, but in the end it is the simple result of cars becoming faster and faster", is the Italian realistich.

Understanding for Pirelli

Despite the fact that faster-wearing tyres can provide more spectacle, Binotto understands the tyre supplier of Formula 1: "I understand that Pirelli is concerned, I understand that the FIA is concerned about safety issues and I think it is a conviction that the changes already approved for 2021 will not be enough. In that case we will make further changes on the aero for safety reasons, there is nothing of truth that we have complained about this", clarifies the team boss.
