Maria Isola is known as being the head of Pirelli Formula 1. It is his job to ensure that the tyres are doing their job and listening to any feedback that the teams may have about how to improve the compounds for future seasons. However, the Italian does something completely different on the side to take his mind of Formula 1. He drives an ambulance.

"I was 18 and I had some friends who said you should do it and I was like 'no no I don't want to do that,'" Isola told GPBlog. "Then they told me that it is possible to do the training without becoming a volunteer for the ambulance so I thought that the training was interesting because it's a course with medical staff. I did a completely different course in mechanical engineering so it was interesting to learn something new.

"So I did it and then I thought that if I didn't use the skills then I would forget them after a few months. So I tried it and I've never stopped. It's now 32 years that I've been a volunteer and I still enjoy it!"

Many members of the Formula 1 circus have different ways of taking their minds of the sport but volunteering for the emergency services is probably one of the most intense!
