Horner says new F1 regulations should be delayed until 2022!

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner says that F1's new rules should be delayed until 2022, with the new regulations, set for 2021, not yet announced. The new regulations are set to include a budget cap, simpler wings to ease turbulence and other changes to improve racing.

Horner believes that F1 can introduce the budget cap for 2021, but that the overhaul of the regulations should be left until 2022.

Making more competitive racing has been one of the main priorities for Liberty Media since they took over F1, with more DRS zones added and front wings already changed to try to prevent turbulence for following cars, with limited success.

Horner told Autosport: “With hindsight we would have been better bringing the cap in first for 2021 and taking more time to develop these regulations and bring them in for 2022.

“It’s impossible to bring that cap forward into 2020. You’ll never achieve agreement on it.

“The budget cap is ultimately a sensible thing for F1 but the interim period of 2020 with the current regulations we have as teams build up for 2021, with unrestricted spend, makes it a very expensive year.

“An opportunity has perhaps been lost to have had that process more controlled under the cap, and delay these regulations and evolve them.”
