Liberty Media and Formula 1 chief executive Chase Carey opened up about the decision to go ahead with the Netflix show ‘Drive to Survive’, as well as hinting that Ferrari and Mercedes could take part in the second series.

Drive to Survive summed up the 2018 F1 season with the involvement of most of the teams giving insight and behind the scenes footage, other than Ferrari and Mercedes who opted out of.

Carey stated that the Netflix show was part of Liberty Media’s idea to evolve F1 since they took over the sport from Bernie Ecclestone in 2017.

Carey said to La Presse: "F1 had to evolve.

"Today, in a market where consumers are solicited from all sides, we must constantly reinvent ourselves if we want to be successful.

"The objective is to captivate the imagination of the fans and give them unprecedented access to the grand prix," Carey added.

"The possibilities offered by new technologies are endless."

For series two however, Carey admitted that top teams Ferrari and Mercedes are interested in being involved after the success of the first.

"Fans want to be in the car, in the garages, behind the screens of the engineers. And not only during the grand prix," Carey said.

"We collaborated with Netflix last season, and it was a great marketing venture even though not all teams participated.

"They [Ferrari and Mercedes] saw the success of the series and we had good discussions with them about the possibility of participating in other similar projects, if we produce another season.”
