Max Verstappen and the champions of other racing classes were not the only drivers to receive awards at the FIA gala in Baku on Friday night. Fernando Alonso also received an award. His brilliant duel with Sergio Perez at the Brazilian Grand Prix earned him the 'Action of the Year' award.

Ahead of the ceremony, Formula 1 fans could vote for the overtake of the year. Nominated on behalf of F1 was the battle between Alonso and Perez, with the Aston Martin driver securing third place at the expense of the Red Bull Racing driver in the final moments of the Brazilian GP.

That moment was rewarded with the award for Action of the Year. Alonso was not present at the gala in Baku, but sent a video message thanking everyone. "A big thanks for voting me for the action of the year regarding my battle with Sergio in Brazil. I also want to thank and share this award with Sergio," said the 42-year-old Spaniard.

"Any battle on track needs the collaboration of two. I think this should be an example not only for present but also for future generations where we must promote clean driving without any contact between cars. So hopefully see you next year with more action on track," said the two-time world champion.
