In Formula 1, the championship has long been decided, but only now has it been determined who became champion in Formula 2. Until the last race of the season, it remained exciting between Theo Pourchaire and Frederik Vesti. On Saturday in Abu Dhabi, Vesti, who is second in the championship, picked up many points over Pourchaire, but it was not enough.

The race was won by Jack Doohan, but little attention was paid to that. The battle between the two championship candidates was much more exciting. Pourchaire went in early for new tyres while Vesti fought at the front. After the Dane had also made his stop, he ended up directly behind his rival. What followed was an intense battle, with overtaking attempts from both sides.

In the end, Vesti had the advantage of his slightly better tires and managed to outpace Pourchaire. Once freed from the Frenchman, Vesti raced to the front and even managed to finish third. This was preceded by a collision with Maloney. The Red Bull Junior spun off the track and saw his race go up in smoke.

Pourchaire is F2 champion

On Sunday, it was Pourchaire who gained enough points to clinch the championship. Prior to the race, the Frenchman had a 16-point lead over Vesti, and managed to defend it during the Grand Prix. With his Formula 2 championship, the ART driver is the celebrated man.

Pourchaire, who has already been allowed to complete tests in Alfa Romeo's Formula 1 car, gave an interview to GPblog over the summer. Among other things, the 20-year-old Frenchman talked about his future in Formula 1 and Formula 2. Dutchman Richard Verschoor also raced in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, but eventually dropped out.
