Carlos Sainz is 'just ready' to take part in the first two free practice sessions ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix. The two-time race winner was still missing from the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriquez Circuit on Thursday due to illness.

In a statement, Ferrari reported on Thursday that Sainz had received permission from the FIA to miss the press moments in Mexico City. The Spaniard was not feeling well, but he is fit enough to practice the SF23 on Friday.

Important weekend for World Championship

This weekend's Mexican GP is an important one for Ferrari. Frederic Vasseur's team is just 22 points behind Mercedes in the constructors' championship with four races to go. Second place in the World Championship is certainly still a possibility, so the Italians can count on Sainz in the battle with Mercedes.

Sainz himself, as the current number five in the world championship, can even still look at Hamilton's P3. The gap is fairly large at 30 points but not unbridgeable. Last year, Sainz finished fifth in Mexico, his provisional best result ever at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez Circuit.
