After Lewis Hamilton's pole position on Saturday, Mercedes was hopeful of a good result. The Briton narrowly missed out on the podium with fourth place. Toto Wolff is disappointed by the result, he told the German branch of Sky Sports.

Wolff disappointed after Hungarian GP

"I think we lost a podium today. And with qualifying maybe two," began the Mercedes team boss, referring to Hamilton's poor start and Russell's poor qualifying. "The pace of our cars is fine compared to the rest, but of course the gap to Verstappen is huge. It makes no sense to go after the second best when the best is so far away."

Hamilton confirmed yesterday that the Mercedes was fast at the Hungaroring by putting his car on pole. According to Wolff, his team had the second fastest car this weekend, he told ServusTV: "You can also see where George (Russell) is coming from, but we didn't bring out the potential. The race was not good."

Wolff sees lead Verstappen

The Mercedes has clearly made strides since the start of the season. Despite that, the gap with Verstappen and Red Bull is still very big. "The 30-second difference at the end, that's like Formula 2 against Formula 1," he said.
