Albers: 'Red Bull always had a good car, but that was the difference'

Like all F1 fans, Christijan Albers had seen it again: Max Verstappen was once again dominant at the Spanish Grand Prix, which the reigning champion then won by a large margin. By now, it is almost becoming normal for the Red Bull Racing driver to win races.

Meanwhile, the counter stands at victories in Formula 1. "The combination Max, with that natural talent, and with that Red Bull; they are just unbeatable," Albers said in De Telegraaf's podcast. "You get the situation where we have had that shouting, that booing [from fans towards Verstappen]. Of course Michael Schumacher had that too, when he won so many races. And I think it really doesn't stop at these championships. "

'Mercedes had 40bhp more'

Of course, Red Bull's car is currently of exceptional class. According to Albers, this has been the case for many years, but never fully materialised because of rival Mercedes' extremely strong engine. "In the period when Mercedes was so successful, unbeatable, they just had 40 hp more in that engine. And that makes up for so much! If you don't have that downforce and efficiency on that car, have a lot of drag, but you have 40bhp more. You know, then it's also almost hard to beat that team."

According to Albers, that advantage has gone away since the regulation change, partly because other parties - such as Honda - have snatched many people with expertise from Mercedes. The former F1 driver thinks that in terms of horsepower, the engines in F1 are currently little inferior to each other. "Then it's really about the performance of the car. That is where Red Bull now has the upper hand over the rest," Albers concluded.
