Max Verstappen was hoping to compete for victory in the sprint race from third on the grid, but it did not come to that. He collided with George Russell on the first lap, and the damage sustained prevented him from fighting for the win, and as a result, the Red Bull Racing driver was quite angry with Russell.

"I just don't understand why you need to take so much risk on lap one understeering into my sidepod.", he said about the fight with the Mercedes driver immediately afterwards. Before the interview, Verstappen already had a brief moment where he spoke to Russell. "We all have cold tyres, and it's easy to lock up. And, it's easy to explain it: "Ahhh mate, I locked up. Look at the onboard."

Later, the Dutchman also briefly hit the wall after the collision with Russell, but that did not otherwise cause the damage. "Not the wall, just turn two. There's a hole in the sidepod, it doesn't look good. But we are focusing on tomorrow." Red Bull may repair the damage, though not at the cost of a grid penalty.

Fine points for Verstappen

Verstappen crossed the finish line third in Azerbaijan, earning him six points. Perez ran into two points for the World Championship. " It's some good points. But it is what it is."
