Former Formula One driver Damon Hill praised Fernando Alonso after his performance at the Australian Grand Prix. The 1996 British world champion does see the Spaniard remaining involved in the sport as team boss after his active F1 career. Hill believes Alonso has the qualities needed for a good team boss.

The Australian Grand Prix was one that we will probably remember many years from now. A record number of red flags caused quite a stir as several standing restarts took place.

Fernando Alonso was also a victim of the chaotic restart, after he was tapped into the lap by compatriot Carlos Sainz. Alonso immediately reported on the board radio towards his team, telling race control to restore the order of battle as it was before the restart.

Alonso well aware of rules

Race control did indeed reverse the result and Alonso was still third at Albert Park. Despite his age of 41, the Spaniard is still razor-sharp. "At some point he should just become team boss, that would be really brilliant. He understands this sport like no other," Hill reports in the F1 Nation podcast.

Alonso has often made himself heard on the board radio this year, giving the team plenty of encouragement. With the car's surprisingly strong performance, the Spaniard seems in very good spirits and knows how to motivate the team time and again. He is emerging as a true leader of the Aston Martin F1 team. According to Hill, these qualities are needed as team boss. With that, the Brit does see Alonso returning as team boss in the future.
