Pascal Wehrlein captured his first Formula E victory of the season after a clever overtaking race. Logically, the Porsche driver was overjoyed with his victory, which solidifies his second place in the championship.

The first ePrix of the race weekend in Saudi Arabia offered plenty of action, especially at the head of the field. Wehrlein started ninth on the grid, but managed to fight his way to the front. In the closing stages of the race, he started to put the pressure on Sam Bird and, after several overtaking attempts, managed to take over the lead.

After this, he still got Jake Dennis behind him. The championship leader also had a fine catch-up race on his hands: coming from 12th place, he closed in on P2 in the last three laps. He put Wehrlein under considerable pressure, but the German managed to repel his attacks and retain the lead.

Wehrlein enjoyed overtaking

Whereas overtaking with the new Gen3 cars still seemed difficult in Mexico, more overtaking took place during the second race of the season. Wehrlein experienced this first-hand during his overtaking race and therefore enjoyed his advance. "In our case, we overtook quite a lot of cars. It’s a lot of fun on the track," the race winner told the press conference.

He continued: "I love the first and second sector, how the corners are and how close you need to be to the wall to be fast. Overtaking was definitely quite possible here. It was a super fun and interesting race, I enjoyed it a lot." With his win, Wehrlein solidifies his second place in the championship, after finishing second behind Dennis in Mexico.
