It has now been more than two years. Yet the controversial way the 2021 season ended still raises questions. David Coulthard, for example, was asked again last week about the way Max Verstappen snatched the world title from the nose of Lewis Hamilton on the last lap.

Either way, the 2021 championship finale could rival the most exciting in Formula 1 history. It ensured that the rivalry between Verstappen and Hamilton is at once equal to the greatest ever, comparable to Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. In an interview on TikTok, Coulthard was asked how these drivers would have reacted to such a denouement?

Romatic

In his response, Coulthard states that he thought it was a great question. The Scot immediately talks about the different personalities, but they all have something in common. "I would like to believe with my romantic motorsport heart that there was enough competitive respect. Even if you had Prost and Senna at their worst, Piquet and Mansell, or Michael and Mika, Michael and whoever, competing against each other. At the end there was always a handshake, a bit like boxers shaking hands and hugging each other afterwards."

According to Coulthard, Hamilton reacted to the loss with particular maturity. "It might have been harder to do that when he was younger. He's in his late 30s. With age comes maturity. The advantage of youth is that you don't know everything, you don't know. You are not afraid of anything. As you get older you start to understand the consequences, maturity enables you to deal with different situations," Coulthard concludes.

Himself, Couthard admits, would have made a lot of fuss. " Up to the European Court," he laughed.
