Max Verstappen had to face an unexpected opponent in qualifying: none other than Kevin Magnussen is in pole position for the sprint in Brazil. Verstappen can live just fine with that result, as his direct competitors are further behind him.

"We knew that it was going to be that one lap because there was that potential for rain. I think I was the fourth of fifth car, and I locked up into turn 8. That cost me pole today" Verstappen explained after qualifying.

For the sprint race, despite the missed pole, things are looking good for the Dutchman, as he only has to beat Magnussen ahead of him. The Haas driver took pole position in very surprising fashion after George Russell caused a red flag. As it started raining in the minutes that followed, nobody was able to improve as the session continued.

"In these conditions, anything can happen. It was difficult but you also need to find the limit that you can push and you don't want to have big mistakes and potentially drop out." Verstappen continued. The Red Bull Racing driver cannot be unhappy with his second starting position. "Q3 was a bit of a lottery but nevertheless still on the front row." said the two-time world champion.
