Newey recalls difficult years with Red Bull: 'That becomes demotivating'

Red Bull Racing have had a very successful season. Not only did the racing team manage to clinch their second world title in a row with Max Verstappen, but the team also ended up winning the constructors' championship. Adrian Newey realises it can be proud of its current results, he told Red Bull's official website.

The Austrian formation are in their second successful period in history. 12 years ago, Red Bull managed to take their first-ever world title with Sebastian Vettel, after which the German did so again in the three years that followed.

"We were lucky enough to have a very good run from 2009 through to 2013," recalls Newey. "But by the end of ’13, I was honestly just feeling a bit tired. And then with the change from the V8s to the hybrids, our engine partner through those years [Renault] was never really able to provide a competitive unit."

However, it did not mean that Newey did not see potential in Lewis Hamilton's victorious years with his own team. On several occasions, Red Bull's top man felt it could compete in parts, but it lacked the complete package.

"I think between 2014 to 2020, there were two or three occasions where we actually had the best chassis package, but we didn’t have a car that could win a championship as an overall package. That becomes a little bit demotivating—realizing that no matter how good your chassis is, you still can’t win the championship."
