Hamilton shares personal grief: 'I had a tough time at school'
Lewis Hamilton has raised his voice on a project by the UNHCR, the UN institute dedicated to improving the situation faced by refugees worldwide. The F1 driver shares personal suffering from his childhood and understands the plight of young displaced people who do not have access to quality education.
UNHCR is championing education for young refugees and a report on the current situation talks about more than 10 million children who are displaced and do not have acces to it. Hamilton supports UNHCR's action and wrote a closing word in the report. In that closing word, the Briton is candid about his own childhood. Because of unpleasant situations from his own past, he can somewhat imagine the plight of young people.

Hamilton writes that education is a key that can open many doors, but that it is problematic that not everyone has access to solid education. Hamilton: "I struggled in school, no matter how hard I tried. That was partly due to the fact that I am dyslexic. I found that out when I was 17. It also had to do with the fact that my self-confidence was damaged by teachers telling me I wasn't smart enough and that I wouldn't amount to anything. They looked at me, my background and the colour of my skin and put a cap on my potential."
For Hamilton, it is important that everyone has access to solid education and that everyone has a chance to develop their potential. Hamilton concludes his message: "That is why I am proud to raise my voice on this project to give refugees, wherever they are and wherever they come from, equal access to quality education."
