Max Verstappen is racking up victories and pole positions. In the last two years in particular, it has been the rule rather than the exception to find the Red Bull driver at the front of the field. But in his first few years with the team, this was an exception. Team boss Christian Horner knew something had to change if Verstappen was to reach the podium not occasionally, but often.

The young Dutchman was not lacking in talent. But the car suffered from many reliability problems in its first few years with the team, and Verstappen too often had to bring his car to a premature halt. The problems were mostly engine-related, with the team still driving Renault engines at the time, and Horner knew changes had to take place for their driver to perform more consistently. Therefore, in 2019, the team signed a deal with engine supplier Honda. From that moment on, there is the change the team has been looking for. The engine is reliable and fast. With this power source, a design for a car by Adrian Newey and the Red Bull Racing team, there is a basis for a car that can allow Verstappen to fight at the front.

Equipment matches Verstappen's talent

The British team boss is proud of what they have built. To NOS.nl Horner says: "We can now give him the material that matches his talent. Now that that has been achieved and Verstappen seems to be on his way to his second world title, it is up to Horner and his team to maintain that level. "It's a great time for Formula 1 with many young, talented drivers, but Max is showing time and time again that he is above them all. I've been his team boss for six years now and I'm looking forward to the next six."
