FIA after reflecting on 2022 rule changes: 'Reduce size and weight'

Formula 1 has begun new technical and sporting regulations in 2022. After the first four races, the FIA reflects on the rule changes and draws the first conclusions on what could be better in 2026.

FIA reflects on rule changes

The usually reliable F1 journalist Adam Cooper reports on Twitter that the FIA has set goals they want to achieve with rule changes to be implemented in 2026. The FIA seems to have taken a good look at what exactly the new technical and sporting rules have changed about the cars and the sport over the past four races. Indeed, the 2022 package was primarily intended to help the cars track each other better during the race and to bring the spending patterns of individual teams more in line.

It looks like that has been achieved. But the FIA does indicate that they want to build on it and that it can be improved. Cooper quotes, "[The FIA is trying, ed.] to use lessons learned recently to make the cars follow each other even better and to reduce the size and weight of the cars." Both Ferrari and Red Bull Racing suffered from excess weight at the beginning of the season and have been working to get rid of it. In addition, complaints were already sounding that the 2022 F1 cars were too big. So the FIA seems to be listening carefully.

Furthermore, Cooper says that the FIA also wants to significantly reduce the 'drag' of the cars to increase the reliability and efficiency of the engine. Finally, the FIA wants to take further steps toward standardizing and simplifying strategically chosen components to reduce expenses for the teams.
