These are the changes made to the cars in Formula E from 2020-21

Formula E have just presented their new car which will first run in the 2020-21 season. With Formula 1 heading for a rule and regulation overhaul in the same year, fans will notice a lot of changes in just a short period of time. 

The new Formula E cars are an evolution from Gen2 meaning we won't get major changes. The Gen2 car made its debut in 2018 and allowed drivers to remain in the same cockpit for the duration of the event as they didn't need to swap cars due to a low charge. 

An evolution

Formula E is currently in the second season under the current regulations, but for the following season, a switch will be made to the Gen2 EVO cars. An evolution, but what exactly is different about the new cars? Albert Fabrega mapped out the differences on his Twitter channel.

From the front, you can immediately see the difference with the predecessor of the EVO. Where in the current variant the front wing still crosses the wheels, the drivers now have a real front wing. 

Shark Fin

The biggest changes take place at the back of the car. From now on, a 'shark fin' can be seen on the FE car. The so-called shark fin runs backwards from the airbox and gives drivers more balance when cornering at high speed.

Just like the front wing, the rear wing is also separated from the rest of the car. Where in the current variant the rear wing was connected to the bodywork over the wheels and there was not really one rear wing (it was more like two small wings on the side), the Formula E now opts for a separate wing. We cannot call it a rear wing at all, because they are two separate pieces that are not yet connected to each other.
