Adrian Newey on regulation changes

Newey not worried about 2026: 'I've always enjoyed that'

Currently, Red Bull Racing are the fastest team in the field. Of course, this has not always been the case. A good time for teams to make a leap forward is when there are big changes in terms of the regulations. In 2026, another such big rulebook change is on the horizon. Adrian Newey is not worried about that.

The last major rule change has gone into effect since 2022. The biggest change in this had to do with the ground effect of the cars. From this same year, Red Bull Racing has known its dominance in the sport.

Newey enjoys rule changes

So you could argue that Red Bull is very good at responding to rule changes. The man at Red Bull who is largely responsible for designing a new car according to the regulations is Adrian Newey. In an interview with TopGear, he discusses what he thinks of rule changes. ''I’ve always enjoyed regulation changes. Not just because of the loopholes that may exist but figuring out the demands of the regulations, how they affect the fundamental principles of the car’s layout. For 2022, there were a few things that we needed to do differently. It was the return of ground effect – venturi – and I was certainly aware of the pitfalls having worked in IndyCar with that format.''

The fact that Newey is enjoying changes to the regulations is a good sign for the Austrian team ahead of 2026. This is because the technical regulations will then undergo another overhaul. It remains to be seen whether Red Bull will be as dominant then as it is now.
