Adrian Newey has worked with the greatest drivers ever. But he has not with Fernando Alonso. Recently, the mastermind of Red Bull Racing let it be known that he would like to have worked with Fernando Alonso one day, with the two-time world champion increasingly heading towards the end of his career. So, the chances of Newey and Alonso ever working in Formula One for the same team seem negligible.

Alonso has also heard Newey's words, and he said on Thursday, speaking to, among others GPblog: "He’s a legend of the sport. We've been very close, a few times, of working together. We spoke about this. I remember when he published the book a few years ago in Spain. I had the privilege to do the first page, the foreword."

Although the two greats never worked together, they do know each other. Alonso says of the Briton: "He’s just an incredible person, and I was so lucky to work in the same environment as him, even if we never worked together. I'm happy that I'm living and I'm driving at this time when Adrian Newey is building Formula One cars. I wish one day I was working with him. I will drive the Valkyrie at home, and maybe I feel something already when I jump in, and that will make me happy," Alonso laughed.

Finally, the Spaniard was asked: 'Is Newey more responsible than anyone else for you only taking two world titles?' The Aston Martin driver responds firmly: "He is responsible. Yes, for 19 drivers for two decades, not to win a championship."
