Hamilton on Red Bull dominance: 'As a sport we need to make rules better'

Lewis Hamilton has given his opinion on the dominance of Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing this season. The seven-time world champion prefers to see competition at the front of the field and says that is one of the reasons he started racing as a child. However, in an interview with Hungarian M4 Sport, Hamilton also indicated that it will be difficult to stop Red Bull's current dominance.

Dominant F1 period Hamilton and Mercedes

In the period between 2014 and 2020, Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes dominated the sport for many years. Hamilton took the world title with supremacy in all those years, with the exception of 2016. Mercedes ran away with seven constructors' titles during that period, adding an eighth title in 2021. Asked if Hamilton has any advice for Red Bull on how to deal with a dominant car, he stated, "I don't think I need to give them any advice. They've been through it before, it's not their fault they are so dominant either. Well, it is their 'fault' though, because they have done better than the others."

Hamilton also responds to cricics who think Hamilton should not complain after a dominant period of more than seven years. "About my own experience, people keep saying, 'Yes, but you also had dominant cars and now you are complaining about it'. "That's not the case. We all want our opponents to be as good as possible and compete at the front." The seven-time world champion also says that a driver field which is also very close at the front gave him the motivation to take up car racing as a child.

Hamilton keen to see changes to rules

Recently, Hamilton argued that prolonged periods of dominance would not be good for the sport. In the interview with M4 Sport, the Briton also reiterates this. He would like to see the FIA make adjustments to make the battle at the front of the field more exciting: "As a sport, we need to make the rules better so we don't rob fans of an entire era of an exciting battle for wins between multiple teams." However, Hamilton does see one factor which could affect his plan. According to the Mercedes driver, the budget cap does not make it easy to close the gaps to the top.
