Hamilton fans may 'boo' Verstappen: 'Have nothing to prove them'

Max Verstappen is looking forward to the British Grand Prix. The Dutchman has won at Silverstone once before and hopes to do so again this weekend. But boos from British fans may leave him cold.

At the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix in 2020, it was not the British national anthem that sounded, but the Dutch anthem. Lewis Hamilton, who had won the British Grand Prix seven times before, was eating up the tyres with his Mercedes and saw Verstappen drive to victory. It was a sparse victory for the Dutchman at the time, who now has 42 wins on his record.

Nothing remained of that jubilation in 2021. The Red Bull driver was engaged in an intense title fight with Hamilton and had contact with the Brit in 'Copse'. While Verstappen had to visit the hospital, the revelry was great in England. Hamilton won his home Grand Prix for the eighth time. In 2022, world champion Verstappen returned to Silverstone. The Dutchman received some booing from the British fans, who were disappointed with the title result the year before.

If it's up to Verstappen, the fans may 'boo' again this weekend: "I don't see this as having to prove anything against the crowd or whatever. I mean, I'm just here to have a good race and try to win it." The Red Bull driver is looking forward to the race weekend. "It's an important race for us. We enjoy coming here," he said.
