Fernando Alonso is known as a firm driver, doing everything to get the maximum result. During the past Grands Prix, the Spaniard was sympathetic towards his teammate Lance Stroll by not overtaking him.

At the Barcelona Grand Prix, Alonso told him over the board radio that Stroll need not worry, as he would not attack him. At Spielberg, the two-time world champion did not get past his Canadian teammate. Wild rumours circulated that Alonso might have stated in his contract that he would not be allowed to overtake the team owner's son. Talking to DAZN, F1 journalist Antonio Lobato and former F1-driver Pedro de la Rosa do not hide their annoyance at this rumour mill.

Absurd rumours

"It is absurd," states Lobato, to which De la Rosa immediately agrees. "Yes, it is indeed true that Alonso is being cautious with Stroll," Lobato states about his compatriot, immediately adding a comment: "He does not want to put pressure on him to avoid a touch and thus cause a possible pointless Sunday." The journalist points out that the Spaniard is thinking in the best interest of the team. "Any other driver he would have attacked immediately," he said. According to De la Rosa, this also makes sense: "Every driver thinks of his team as long as his teammate does too."
