The five-second time penalty Carlos Sainz received at the Australian Grand Prix will stand. Ferrari's appeal was turned down by the FIA and the team accepts it. Commenting on the ruling, Ferrari says it is committed to fairer competition.

Sainz was the only one penalised after a particularly messy final phase in Melbourne. On the second standing restart of the day, the Spaniard rammed Fernando Alonso off the track. Sainz received a penalty, but all the other troublemakers around him did not. Ferrari thought it had a case and appealed to the race committee with new elements.

Ferrari acknowledges FIA decision

The FIA has since rejected the appeal and Ferrari has responded to this in the media. In a tweet, the Scuderia wrote: "We acknowledge the FIA's decision not to review Sainz's penalty at the 2023 Australian Grand Prix. We are naturally disappointed, and felt we have provided sufficient significant new elements for the FIA to re-examine the decision. Especially seen in the context of the particular conditions and multiple incidents that occurred at the restart."

Below that, the team writes that it is looking ahead: "We are however respectful of the process and the FIA's decision. We now look ahead to having broader discussions with the FIA, F1 and all teams to improve our sport's policing, in order to ensure the highest level of fairness and consistency that our sport deserves."
