Toto Wolff slapped his hands in front of his face when he thought he was making the correct strategic move by bringing George Russell in under the safety car, only for the red flag to be waved moments later. All other drivers were able to change their tyres in the pit lane 'for free', so Russell was very unlucky. Because of this, Wolff wants more clarity from race control on what the criteria for red flags are.

In the end, it all didn't matter that much for Russell and Mercedes, as the 25-year-old Briton crashed out moments later with a blown engine. Still, Wolff does want to know why a red flag was chosen, as no one on his team had really factored in that scenario.

"Both red flags we did not see coming. Restarts are a great entertainment factor. We just need to understand when red flags are given and when a safety car or virtual safety car is used. In those incidents you could have used both [also]," Wolff is quoted by the BBC.

The Mercedes team boss is not critical. He mainly wants clarification, he himself explains. "Formula 1 is so successful because it is sport and we follow the rules and that gives a lot of entertainment. As long as it is clear how this is interpreted, I am fine with it."
