First Mercedes engine broken: Russell gets new power unit

George Russell had to retire early on Sunday in the Austrian Grand Prix. The Williams driver had problems with his Mercedes engine and those problems are so serious that some parts have to be replaced next weekend.

Because Russell is only replacing engine components for the first time, he doesn't have to take a grid penalty. However, the chance that this will happen towards the end of the season is now a bit bigger.

Specific problem with Russell

According to Autosport.com, research at the Brixworth plant has shown that Russell's car will have a new V6 combustion engine, MGU-H and turbo installed. It has also been shown that the problem only occurred with Russell's engine and that there are no concerns about the other Mercedes engines.

During the Styrian Grand Prix Russell will be looking for his first World Championship point in Formula 1. Last week the young Brit was still very close to a top-ten ranking, but a stalling engine put a stop to that.
