Live | Formula 1 German Grand Prix Qualifying - Will Ferrari stay on top?

2019-07-27 13:00:00 by Matt Gretton

Ferrari ruled the waves during the first day of the German Grand Prix weekend. If things they stay as they are in the cooler temperatures, then they could well be competing for pole position. But the temperatures are key.

Yesterday, the air temperature reached around 36c, while the track temperature was flirting with 60c. In Austria, the Mercedes cars struggled to handle the heat, and while they're fitted with plenty of upgrades to tackle the problem, that might be why Ferrari was ahead yesterday.

Max Verstappen, who had some small issues during FP2, looks strong and in his usual position to pick up the pieces should Ferrari and Mercedes drop something. Pierre Gasly was lucky not to need any penalties after his crash on Friday.

The midfield battle is as tight as ever. At the end of yesterday's session, we had seven different chassis in the top 10. Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren were only two teams to have both of their drivers in.

Today's weather

It has rained heavily overnight. The Hockenheim track should be green today which might end up favouring Valtteri Bottas. However, there's around a 50% chance of rain during qualifying which might add a little bit of spice. Follow qualifying below.
