Formula One's ambitions to add a race on the African continent to its calendar have been clear for some time. Eyes then quickly turn to the Kyalami Circuit in South Africa, where Formula One will be welcomed with open arms.

Return of F1 to South Africa

The Formula One calendar in recent years has consisted mainly of races in Europe, America and Asia, but has not had a race in Africa since 1993. This should change, according to Liberty Media. The most obvious candidate for an African Grand Prix is the Kyalami Circuit near Johannesburg in South Africa. At this circuit 21 of the 23 African Grands Prix have been held. The first time was in 1967 and the last time was in 1993.

In the media more and more rumors are circulating that Formula 1 will have an African race in 2024, which should take place at Kiyalami. Inquiries by F1 journalist Junaid Samodien at least reveal that the interest is mutual. "Toby Venter (Kyalami CEO) has officially said that he will be delighted to see Formula 1 return to Kyalami, " Samodien reports on Twitter.

Waiting for official confirmation

We will probably have to wait for an official confirmation, but if we are serious about the ambitions of Formula 1, a return of Formula 1 is imminent. Something that many drivers also welcome. Especially Lewis Hamilton has already expressed his strong support for a Grand Prix in Africa. It seems only a matter of time.
