Alpine had its best race of the season so far in Russia, as Fernando Alonso said after the race. However, a chance at the stage fell through when rain poured down the track in the final stages.

He already indicated that a podium was definitely on the cards, but that the rain put a stop to that. "Some people took risks, others took other risks. We were unlucky, or those on the podium were lucky. But in these conditions it's always a lottery," Alonso told Motorsport.com.

Luck plays a big part in rain according to Alonso

This was proven in the case of Lando Norris, who missed out on his first win in the last few laps of the race. "Norris drove a great race, but he also missed the podium or even his first win due to bad luck," continued the Spaniard. "Luck is just a big factor when it rains."

"It's sad because when we're not competitive and we're driving in P11 or P12 it never rains, so we never get lucky. And today we were driving in P3 and it started to rain," said the Alpine driver, who is otherwise happy with the race he drove. "But we're not very lucky."
